About

Prof. M. C. Arunan is a long-time member of the Gnowledge Lab and the originating spirit behind the CUBE program — Collaboratively Understanding Biology Education — one of the lab’s flagship initiatives in undergraduate science education.

His work has been driven by a question that animates much of the lab’s pedagogy: can a small undergraduate research lab, equipped with frugal model systems, sustain frontline biology questions? The CUBE program — running since 2012 across colleges in many Indian cities — answers that question by introducing simple model organisms (daphnia, snails, Drosophila) into student-led, investigative research projects. He has been a sustained advocate for shifting undergraduate biology from textbook recitation to doing science, framing this in his metaphor of “populating India with STEM spectators” — building the audience for science the way street cricket builds an audience for the sport.

He has co-authored, with Meena Kharatmal and Nagarjuna G., several learning units and research papers on biology education — most notably the Microorganisms at our Doorstep unit (Vigyan Pratibha, HBCSE, 2019/2021) and the natural-selection concept inventory study.
